.se or .com? How to choose the right domain for your business

This is one of the most common questions new business owners ask when registering their first domain. The answer depends less on technology and more on who you actually want to reach.

.se: trust with a Swedish audience

For businesses aimed mainly at Swedish customers, a .se domain signals local roots straight away. Swedish consumers tend to trust .se more in e-commerce, and the extension is run by the Swedish Internet Foundation (IIS) under strict Swedish regulation — which gives many visitors an extra sense of security.

Worth knowing: registering a .se or .nu domain requires a valid Swedish personal identity number or organisation number under the IIS policy. That makes the domains harder for foreign actors to obtain, which also reduces the risk of spam domains and raises overall trust in the extension.

.com: global recognition

.com is still the most recognised domain extension in the world. If you plan to expand internationally, sell digital products to a global audience, or simply want the extension most people type out of habit, .com is a safe choice. It is also not tied to any national registration rule, which makes administration easier for companies with owners in several countries.

Do I have to choose just one?

No — and for many businesses it is actually best practice to register both. Use your primary domain (usually .se for a Swedish business) as your main address, and point the other at the same website or keep it reserved so nobody else can register your brand. It is cheap insurance: renewals start at SEK 239–279 a year.

What about .nu, .org or .eu?

.nu works as a Swedish alternative with registration requirements similar to .se, and is often popular with start-ups that want a shorter or more available name. .org signals an organisation or non-profit rather than a commercial company. .eu can be relevant if you want to signal a broader European presence without tying yourself to one country.
